What is a vachana?

Short poems that changed a civilization.

The word vachana means "that which is spoken." Unlike Sanskrit hymns composed for priests to recite, vachanas were written in the everyday Kannada of 12th-century Karnataka — direct, rhythmic, unadorned. Anyone could hear them. Anyone could understand them. That was exactly the point.

Each vachana ends with an ankita — a signature-name the poet chose for their personal deity. Basavanna's ankita was ಕೂಡಲಸಂಗಮದೇವ — "the lord of the meeting rivers," referring to Sangameshwara at the confluence of the Krishna and Malaprabha. The ankita grounds every poem in a single relationship: between this person, in this moment, and the divine they are speaking to.

Basavanna is believed to have composed over 1,000 vachanas. Together with the vachanas of other SharanasAllama Prabhu, Akka Mahadevi, Devara Dasimayya — they form one of the most radical bodies of devotional literature ever written.
